Brushlets are a collection of waveforms (in the wavelet packet family) which resemble paintbrush strokes. Using this library of waveform we can synthetise an image (or paint by the numbers) by displaying the most energetic stroke followed by lighter strokes.

As lighter brushlet features are added we see more detail and a transition from an abstract image to an impressionistic to a pointillistic and realistic style appears.
